What skills do I need to volunteer?
Every skill is needed; it all depends on the specific type of program. The most important skill all our volunteers need to have is the willingness to work as part of the team. Your reward for your time served in any of these three countries will be an experience you will cherish for a lifetime.
What is the cost of volunteer service?
A tax-deductible, $5,000 volunteer fee payable to ARK covers air transportation and most local expenses, including accommodation, basic meals, work related ground transportation and one local fun adventure such as a safari to a game park, etc. Volunteers are supervised by local staff and work as part of the local work force.
What about accommodations?
We do our best to arrange basic accommodations. In some cases you may stay and work at a boarding school, live with local family, member of ARK staff, live in a hostel or share room with another international volunteer. Before you travel you will have all the details of where you will be staying.
When do I start my volunteer service?
ARK accepts volunteers all year around depending on individual time, college students normally volunteer or intern during the summer.
Do I get school credit for my volunteer/intern as a college student?
Yes, school credit for your volunteer/intern time can be arranged through your school but has to be approved before your internship begins.
Does ARK provide me with a “Volunteer handbook” to prepare me in advance?
Yes, ARK provides volunteers handbook which is periodically revised to include feed back and recommendations from returning and local volunteers as well as our local staff and project beneficiaries.
How can my children get involved?
We greatly encourage the participation of young people, youth groups, schools, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. Your child’s group could sponsor a specific project or a school. They could travel and spend time working at a school with African children their age, or they could just share what resources they have. There are many different opportunities to participate and the youth are given the freedom to be creative in their involvement.
