Living with my widowed, paternal grandmother was the only life I had ever known. Both my parents died when I was just an infant. It was my grandmother who took me in and cared for me. It was not easy. We faced many financial struggles through the years. After primary school, my grandmother could not afford to pay the high cost of secondary education in Uganda for me and my young brother. At this point, the only option we thought was available was to drop out of school.

Somehow, my grandmother was introduced to the ARK Foundation, and ARK began paying our school fees. Considering our grandmother's old age, ARK also provided us with a professional mentor who was there to help us with school work. Both my brother and I now are in college thanks to the assistance of ARK. Now that we are in different colleges, my young brother has housing on campus while I live with a loving guardian and his family. I am treated just like part of the family. My foster father is a professional carpenter so I get the chance to help him during my time off from school. I enjoy working with him in his workshop and learning new, useful skills.

It wasn't until I completed high school that I truly understood ARK's impact on my life and that of so many orphans. Without a trained professional mentor, I would not have been able to navigate the college application and interview process or the selection of courses. Every step of the process required money, which my grandmother could not provide.

I have friends who completed secondary and high school that have not been so lucky in finding sponsors. I am indebted to the ARK Foundation and my grandmother for their efforts to ensure that I get quality education that will benefit not only my family but the country as a whole. I am excited to be majoring in social studies and administration which will allow me to help other children just like myself.
