AIDS affects children differently, especially children between the ages of 0 to 8 years old who are at risk of neglect. This age group tends to be most vulnerable among orphans and vulnerable children at-large (OVC). Their vulnerability may be caused by a variety of unforeseen issues ranging from their HIV statuses, unhealthy mothers, extreme poverty, lack of proper healthcare, malnutrition, to lack of affection. All of these factors may have serious lifelong effects on the child. The survival of such young children depends largely on the availability of resources and a supportive and nurturing environment that surrounds both the child and the primary caretaker.
